Note: This page is extremely out of date. I will update it soon!
I discovered yoga in the spring of 2009, after a chronic knee injury forced me to give up running. I taught myself sun salutations and learned to flow through podcasts from YogaDownload [highly recommend Dawnelle’s classes], and I slowly began to fall head over heels for the practice. For some of my personal thoughts on yoga, check out these posts:
- on falling for yoga: channeling the yogini.
- on dedication: in it for life.
- on yoga + body image: vanity on the mat.
- on safe zones: “we’re at yoga.”
- on being a “yoga person”: dedication.
Yoga happens to be an expensive habit, especially in New York, and so this page is meant to serve as a guide to yoga deals and yoga studios in Manhattan. It’s a continuing work in progress, so check back, and feel free to comment or email if you’re looking for an opinion on a studio!
FYI: One star [*] = I’ve been to the studio. Two stars [**] = I’ve been to the studio and loved it.

Earth Yoga is so fabulous. Love that place. Have you taken Halle Becker’s classes?
I have! I had a Living Social deal for the month of January and got to take her class twice – one of my favorite instructors ever, most definitely. Earth is a wonderful studio – I just wish their classes weren’t so $$$!

[...] Life isn’t easy. I’m settling into a career path that is marked by one uncomfortable situation after another. Learning to find comfort in discomfort is what yoga teaches me, and I’ll suffer through many more classes if it means there’s this kind of reward at the end. This reward is often gifted without spending any more than the price of a yoga class: physical and emotional well-being, or a damn-I-feel-GOOD kind of Sunday afternoon. Then of course, there’s brunch: a somewhat costlier reward for hard-earned chaturanga arms. [...]
