summer is...

It’s when you can go out after work, indulge in lengthy chatter, and still make it home just as the sun is setting.

It’s when it takes half the time to get dressed in the morning, but you still can’t manage to leave your apartment on time.

IMG_2652it’s dining and drinking al fresco.

It’s when you wonder if mixed veggie juice and ice cream can be considered lunch.

It’s when you walk even more than normal – if that was even possible – because the temperature down in the subway is so stiflingly hot that you’d rather wander 40 blocks than deal with that sweaty air.

It’s when you wear your cheap gladiator sandals on all those walks and pay the price with 3829 cuts on every side of your feet.  This doesn’t stop you from continuing to walk everywhere.  Pain is relative.

IMG_2650it’s getting a complimentary sip of sangria [at ayza], because it may
be the quintessential summer drink.

It’s bare legs and sunburnt shoulders.

It’s when you eat your leftovers cold, because it’s too warm in your apartment to heat them up, but it seems silly to turn the air conditioning on when you only plan to be there for 20 minutes before heading back out.

It’s when dusk comes at 9 PM, and you stroll a few blocks to meet a friend at her apartment while reveling in the perfect temperature in the air.

IMG_2648it’s when nothing tastes better than a cold salad.  [kale + millet + sea salt, cherry tomatoes, string beans, avocado, chickpeas, oregano, parmesan, evoo.]

It’s when your heart belongs to red wine, but the air is too heavy to possibly drink something warm, and so a dry riesling it is.

It’s nostalgia.

It’s long, full days and longer, fuller nights.

Your turn!

i love the fact that i can walk at 8pm and its still light out… or get up earlier and go meet up with a friend for a smoothie and not think "oh now im cold i need a sweater".

nostalgia is a perfect word to use to describe summer isnt it! just radiantly beautiful :)

  • Love this, as usual.

It’s walking around on a sunny Saturday, iPod buds in ears, bug sunglasses on, and a moment of serenity amidst the chaos that comes with city life: that being the numerous responsibilities, constant activity and the Sunday sadness that inevitability sets in. Case in point: is it Friday yet? :)

  • The perfect time for major life changes! (despite the fact that moving in the heat is terrible :)

  • Ah summer time!I can only dream right now as I’m in the middle of exams…but I can’t wait- looking forward to a combo of the buzzy city life you describe (Barcelona for a month! and of course London) and relaxed times with classic novels in shady spots and Oxford punting with friends and a glass of Pimms- The ultimate summer drink over here :)
    xx

summer is definitely brilliant simply because of the hot weather and lack of school lol. it is when you can completely lose track of time — and it’s okay :]

  • summer is a morning bike ride, cold-brewed iced coffee, and ripe blackberries…

  • Fun post, Leslie.

Summer is a walk in the morning when only the birds can be heard, and a walk in the afternoon…just because it’s still pleasant out.

Summer is sitting out on the deck on every day that’s not raining, with a glass of seltzer and a book or laptop.

  • I love summer…
Summer is waking up early before the heat starts, jumping on your bike and riding it for an hour and a half through the country sides, near the cold wood…

Summer is laying on a beach, with a good book, enjoying the sun and the sea, and having an amazing time with your mom.

  • Such an uplifting post! I cannot wait til my summer holidays in a few weeks…for every reason you have stated here! i love being able to sit in the garden until 10pm without having to worry about it being too dark! It’s magic x

  • Summer is…
    Bountiful bags of CSA goodness.
Transportation via boat instead of car!
    Tubing with my cousins.
    Sleeping with the windows open.

And YES on the nostalgia… summer is when I feel most connected to my family and history. My home has been in the family for generations and when I’m spending a lot of time at home in the summer, I feel the closest to them.

  • mmm, summer to me is ice cream cones, sundresses, flip flops, iced coffee, al fresco happy hours, and long walks.

Your salad looks so simple, yet delicious!
