hummus soup.

Who likes hummus?

My sister and I have often discussed that everything pairs well with hummus.  It’s good with vegetables.  It’s good with fruit.  It’s good with bread.  It’s good with a spoon.

I’m not kidding on that last one.  I could happily dip my spoon into the hummus container and eat it plain.

If you break down the recipe, it’s unsurprising that I enjoy it so much.  Chickpeas, I eat all the time.  Tahini, I’m obsessed.  Olive oil, it goes on half the salads I make [and the other half get topped with hummus].  Garlic, it tastes good with everything, bad breath aside.

Plus, hummus is a canvas for endless variety, something of which I am obviously quite fond.  I’ve tried and loved cilantro hummus, roasted red pepper hummus, olive hummus, sundried tomato hummus, pumpkin hummus, lemon hummus…  I could go on.

Really, it was about time that I developed a recipe that would allow me to get away with eating a bowl of hummus with a spoon.  Thanks to my ongoing soup kick, I spent a total of twelve minutes whipping up this masterpiece.  I don’t joke: if you like hummus, this one is a winner.

sundried tomato hummus soup

  • 1 T evoo
  • 1/2 c onion, chopped
  • 1 large clove garlic
  • 2 c cooked chickpeas
  • 3 c vegetable broth
  • 3 T tahini
  • 6 sundried tomato halves

Heat oil over medium heat; sauté onion until browned.  Add garlic, sauté one minute.  Add vegetable broth and chickpeas; bring to a boil.  Lower heat and stir in tahini.  Transfer to food processor or blender.  Add sundried tomatoes and puree.  Can be served warmed or cold.

I had it warm, but I am positive it would taste equally delicious right out of the fridge.  This will definitely be making an appearance when summer comes.  [Though, it saddens me how far off that is].

when I saw the title of this post in my google reader, I nearly jumped with joy! seriously, hummus soup? that is everything I love in a bowl :] i will be making this soon!

  • It is SO hard to break out of those rules sometimes. As healthy and balanced as we try to be, of course these still linger in our minds. But if there is anything to break the rules with, hummus (or hummus soup) is the best option I can think of :)

I love cold chicken dipped in hummus, veggies, hummus as my salad dressing, on sandwiches, on grilled/mixed veggies… ahh the list could go on!

Glad you share a love for one of my all time favorite foods! :)

  • This sounds great! I put hummus on everything — salads, sandwiches and just plain. Love all different varieties, too — it was definitely the thing I missed most living outside the US.

  • I love me some hummus :) Your soup sounds unique (and tasty!)
I used to adhere to the rules all the time, but not so much anymore

  • i also love love lovee hummus!! :D

  • I love hummus, so this sounds AMAZING! So different…bookmarking it now!

YES! Hummus is the best because it is sooo darn versatile. This is going to sound crazy, but I like mixing roasted chickpeas with hummus! Lol, I know that’s weird, but it’s good. I like hummus on everything, basically. Salads, vegetables, pita, naan bread, beans, apples, rice, quinoa…I like it mixed and on top of everything !

  • OMG. I started reading this post (keep in mind I’m making potato soup right now), and as I’m reading I’m thinking… I wonder if hummus would be a good soup base? Maybe I should add it to my soup??

And then you did it. How amazing. Still contemplating whether it’d taste good with potatoes and swiss chard though…

  • yes i adhere to pointlss rules so much more than i should! and that spread looks so gooddd

  • LOVE IT! Hummus is one of my favourite foods no doubt- and I happen to have all the ingredients for your soup!
I’ve been eating hummus since before I can chew- I remember bringing hummus and pita or hummus & chicken as my school lunches in elementary school before it was trendy and eliciting responses of ‘gross!’ from other kids.
I eat hummus with almost everything- since my mom is Middle Eastern, it’s a staple at every meal- eaten with eggs, bread, vegetables, anything and everything!

  • way to go on the soup!

it looks SO awesome! I definatly would love to make this!

  • double portions of chickpeas?! who gives! live it up girl :)

PS did you stick to your weekend goal/ promise?! i did! hah. we’ll discuss. :)

  • I do find myself adhering to food rules for no good reason. I assume a lot of it has to do with my obsessive calorie-counting habits from the past. I find that relaxing the rules and eating more intuitively has served my health and figure way better.

That soup is off. the. chain. Wow!

  • I gotta admit I have never been a fan of hummus…tried making it 3 times and no go! i can go to town on a can of chickpease though…

  • I. Am. Making. This. Tonight.

  • I do often have to remind myself that the portion sizes on packaging are NOT for me. They are arbitrary labels created by companies.

On the other hand, that soup sounds incredible! :)

Thanks for beating me to this idea, its helpfull. I just thought I was first to have it. Im using dried garbanzos, soaked for 24 hrs and cooked for 2-3 hrs, chopped broccoli and garlic added 2/3 of the way, about to add Tahini, maybe some Cumin, lemon juice-maybe zest, salt and pepper of course, and maybe some Sriracha sauce and olive oil- if I had any left-need to buy some with food stamps. Thanks for the tip on to using the blender. Oh, maybe some wine, cheese and crackers to go with it.
