red alert.

I’ve always found the first few weeks of the year to be the grayest of times.  Sunlight is scarce; cloud cover is heavy; temperatures are depressing.  I’m constantly covered head to toe with a warm black coat and knee-high boots, and the only splash of visible color comes from my frozen, yet rosy, cheeks.

However, while the visuals around me may not be particularly inspiring, so far, January has been the best month I’ve had in a long time.  Throughout the past year, I would often say, “Eventually, something’s got to give.”  All at once, it seems everything finally has.

All that is left to brighten up is the material world before my eyes.  My winter colors of choice tend to be cool and dark, but between the arrival of resort collections and my ongoing good moods, I’m feeling a need for the sharpest of colors: rich red.

Red has always worked on my pale skin, and the showstopping pop is perfection next to winter’s washed-out shades.  Though some of my favorite edible supplies of crimson are out of season until the weather warms up – raspberries, cherries, bell peppers, heirloom tomatoes – I’ve thankfully still got daily apples, plus a few other sources:
