dislikes.

I figured I had one post this week inspired by negativity, so why not continue the trend? :)

Actually, I promise this post is not heavy in the slightest.

2010 has already put me in contact with many new people, and those meetings inevitably involve an element of small talk.  Somehow, food always seems to come up.  It’s these moments that remind me that the way I eat seems rather odd to 98% of the population.  While I am thankful to live in New York, where more people take at least some interest in health, I still don’t often find the majority of a group sharing my affinity for whole, clean eating.

Though I can’t add much to conversations about Keebler cookies and Subway, I do have my preferences in the world of whole foods.  I consider myself open to flavors new and old at all times, but throughout that exploratory process, I’ve inevitably come up with a few that didn’t delight my tastebuds.

There are some foods that are so popular, it feels a sin not to enjoy them.  But I am who I am, and so I’ll confess:

IMG_1095keep these far away from each other, please.

I hate the pairing of chocolate and peanut butter.  Of course, I love both separately, but I can’t understand why anyone would ruin two wonderful things by placing them together.  Enlighten me, someone?

IMG_1088like love: almond butter.

On a similar note, peanut butter isn’t my favorite nut butter.  I enjoy it immensely, but given the choice between PB and almond, cashew, pecan, Brazil nut, or coconut butter?  No contest; peanut butter always loses out.

IMG_3555like: baked sweet potato, all on its own.

Sweet potato fries.  I used to love French fries.  Seriously, in high school, I ate them for lunch at least three days a week [sorry, Mom].  I stopped eating them after college.  Then I was afraid to eat them.  And then, I finally ate one, and I ate another, and I discovered I actually don’t like them at all.  Funny how that happens.  Still, I figured sweet potato fries would be my thing – but every time I try them, I wish I were simply eating a plain sweet potato.  I suppose I’m a purist.

IMG_0432like: Thanksgiving vegetables.

Thanksgiving turkey baffles me.  Aside from my issues with eating a hormone-infused, factory-farmed turkey, I think the meat is one of the most bland foods in existence.  On a holiday that revolves around food, it seems odd that the center of the meal would be so mundane.  I played up my vegetarian Thanksgiving this year, but it occurred to me that I’ve actually always been vegetarian on this holiday, because turkey has always been on my dislike list.

IMG_2902like: ice cream from a local, independent shop.  sprinkles: necessary.

I don’t understand the fro-yo obsession.  I am really really healthy, and when I want a frozen treat, it’s not for my health.  I’d like my real ice cream cone with 30 grams of fat and chocolate sprinkles for extra unnecessary sugar, please.

IMG_1909like: crackers and crudites.  hold the chips.

Then there are chips.  I love crackers; in fact, I’m adding crackers to my grocery list right now [although I have bookmarked two excellent-sounding recipes].  But I just don’t get the addiction to chips.  I’ve even once tried the “healthy” kind – still not for me.

IMG_1098like love it all.

Produce and I get along pretty well, obviously [that's an understatement].  I am a bit iffy on mustard and collard greens, though, and I definitely can’t stand cantaloupe.

So, I’ve fessed up. Tell me, what are your dislikes?  Any popular foods you just can’t understand?

  • I think it’s great when you truly realise your likes and disilkes with disregard to how “healthy” or “nutritious” or “caloric” something is. I never liked potato chips either, pre-ED and post-ED…there are many other things i’d prefer to eat.
    My dislikes:
    1. Whipped cream
    2. Marshmallows (maybe because I wasn’t raised with them)
    3. Cottage cheese
    4. Mayonnaise (and anythiny mayonnasiey like potato salad/hollandaise sauce etc)
    5. Celery
    6. Carbonated beverages
    7. Blue cheese

You’re going to the blogger meetup this weekend???? Please say yes.

  • I love this post! Finding your own taste palate is so important. I can’t think of anything off the top of my head that I don’t like. But I really love my sweet potatoes plainly baked as well. Have a wonderful weekend!!

  • i am so similar to you in terms of likes verse dislikes! expect for the frozen yogurt ;) lol…love frozen yogurt, and sprinkles i can agree, so good! :) also i don’t care for PB and chocolate, or flavored/overly sweetened nut butters, i think i went through a phase of PB&CO and now looking back i don’t get why i liked that stuff so much, i like my nut butters pure, raw or roasted, plain… and also same here, pb out of all the nut butters is prob #5 lol…almond and cashew + hazelnut butters beat PB for sure!!
i dislike chips as well, as a kid i also didn’t care for chips, i probably was the only kid in elementary school who didn’t eat Doritos or lays etc…i liked pretzels, and i loved rice cakes with PB or cream cheese :) and hmm i don’t have that big of a dislike list, i like a lot of things, but i like things pretty pure, and not too sweet and not too salty…ohh i don’t like hummus, lol…that’s kinda weird cause i know like almost everyone on the blogs probably loves hummus, i used to like it, but i don’t like it now… ;P i am so weird and go through the oddest food phases!

dislikes: red meat, mayo, mexican food (broad, i know, but still…), fried things, beets.
likes: crab, avocado, marshmallows, chocolate, apples, bread.
i really love ice cream/froyo. i almost like froyo better because i like the texture more!

  • Wow, I don’t think I’ve ever heard someone say they don’t like chocolate + pb. I’m sort of with you on nut butter though- peanut ranks towards the bottom.
    I’ve never liked Mayo!

  • Dislike:

    -grapefruit
    -cantaloupe
    -papaya
    -mango
    -mushrooms
    -cottage cheese
    -mayo or mustard
-anything greasy — pizza, fries, whatever…

I ADORE sweet potato fries though. Who would have thought that 30 minutes in the oven would create such a delicious, yet healthy treat?

  • Some dislikes:
    -raw onion
    -meat
    -soda
-raw zucchini (I’ve never understood how people can digest it properly)
That’s about it – I like most other things.

  • i love your blog & your sense of humor!! i have to disagree with you on the pb & chocolate.. i LOOVE that combination, yum!! & i actually havent had almond butter, i need to try it asap!
    some of my dislikes includee…
i have to agree with others, mayo + me are not friends- grosss!

  • ooh! the dip in your chip picture looks so good! what is it? and what do you think of peanut butter and co’s different kinds of pbs? any recommendations? i’m an almond butter girl myself, but i can’t help but wonder how pb and co does their pb. afterall, the titles just sound too cute and delicious!
    have a lovely day!

    • Mandiee,

It’s hummus! Specifically the triple layer hummus from Trader Joe’s – one of my favorites.

On PB&Co – it’s funny, because I usually prefer my nut butters plain and simple, but when it comes to peanut butter, I don’t mind the creative flavors. My favorites are The Bee’s Knees (pb+honey) and Cinnamon Raisin Swirl. I thought the white chocolate one was way too sweet, and dark chocolate peanut butter obviously isn’t for me. :) The spicy one is also really really (really!) spicy, so be prepared! Hope that helps!

  • p.s. my major like (or adoration, in this case): roasted winter squash. this is my idea of the best dessert :) .

  • This is a lovely post.
Interesting….your first line about a post fueled with negativity. I felt like doing that today….I am feeling very…angry, sad, disapointed, etc etc…I refrained and instead just left my post from yesterday up and will skip the day to post…I hate that cause I want to be a daily poster…but I worry about being too haphazard with posts. You, however, are quite lovely with this.
    Have a nice day Leslie.

  • I’m with you on the real ice cream preference. I like the rich, stick-to-your-gut goodness that comes as a result of cream, milk, and sugar. Yum.

I dislike calamari immensely. I can’t even look at it. I just can’t get down with crunching on tentacles.

  • This is such an interesting phenomenon to me. I’ve experienced the same “rediscovery” of likes and dislikes as you. I prefer baked potatoes over fries, plain and simple. I prefer crackers, and actually HATE chips (except tortilla). And when it comes to Thanksgiving, the dry, over-smoked turkey just holds no taste for me. I think it’s good to know these things about ourselves. And yes, it makes us different, but I don’t think that’s a bad thing.

  • My tastes changed so much as I got older. When I was younger, I was all about the sugar. In my teens, I was all about the salt. Now, I can’t handle anything too salty, and I only crave really sweet things on occasion. Now it’s all about the fruits and veggies, which again, I wouldn’t have touched before.

Some dislikes that come to mind:
    - fish/seafood/meat
    - soy yogurt
    - chia seeds
    - chickpeas
    - cauliflower

  • Nicole G

I’m experiencing the rediscovery of my tastes as well. I don’t know if it is age or if I just was more willing to try veggies and “healthy” food as a result of ED, but I legitimately love certain vegetables that I NEVER gave a chance before LOL

Some popular (atleast bloggie popular LOL) foods that I dislike:
    canned pumpkin
    seafood (I’ve tried SO hard!)
hot sauce (or anything spicy for that matter)
smoothies (fruit or veggie filled – I just don’t find them satisfying or particularly tasty)

I love how balanced and honest your blog is!

This post reminds me of Friends. As in: “I mean, what’s not to like? Custard, good. Jam, good. Meat, good!”

Or to be more relevant: Chocolate, good. Peanut butter, good! :)
