morning person.

I don’t know what it is about the morning, but it always puts me in a state of zen.

It could be the newness – the possibility, the twenty-four hours stretching before us, even when those few hours don’t seem like enough.

It could be the ritual – the aroma of extra-strong coffee, the sensation of stirring oats over a small flame, the collection of items that form a perfect breakfast spread.

Perhaps it’s the anticipation, made more exciting by pieces that excite us, from a simple new outfit to new, uncharted adventures.

Or, perhaps it’s the quiet, interrupted only by soft sounds – the touch of my foot on my yoga mat, deep breaths that push me through the challenges, the water pressure in the shower that washes sweat away.

Maybe, it’s the caffeine.

Or, maybe the knowledge of what’s to come.

I wasn’t always a morning person.  As a teen, I would hit the snooze at least six times, dreading the effort of lifting my head from the warm pillow.  When I began college, my roommate and I accompanied each other as late night partners, typing away with old friends on AIM until the clock turned to three or four.  I never could have imagined that I would regularly see 5:30 AM later in life.

Sometime around the age of twenty, I made a switch.  It happened even before I became infatuated with early morning exercise and balanced breakfasts, yet another aspect I could never have predicted would enter my life.  I started waking up early to finish homework, write papers, read books [procrastination-induced, of course].  But I found myself focused, able to absorb information and produce work far better than in the late evening.  And so, I became a 6 AM girl.

I like feeling productive before I’ve left for work in the morning.  In the evening, I want to relax, socialize, chat, read a book, drink some wine.  But in the morning, I accomplish things.    It’s an active, rather than passive, time of day.

It’s a time to feel awake, alive, and aware.  I always look forward to my mornings.

Are you a morning person or a night person?

  • Definitely a morning person (which is rare for my age, 20). I’m used to always being the first up- and like you said, I love the peace of the morning- I love waking up and having my coffee and a leisurely satiating breakfast, take my time getting ready/reading blogs/getting stuff done (when I’m at school I tend to do lots of my homework during the morning hours.) I think it is much preferable than starting the day off in a hurry which seems like such a tizzy!

morning! there’s just something wonderful about waking up early and having the entire day (or morning?) ahead of me. Even when I am in school, I wake up pretty early to work on my architecture things while everyone else is sleeping. Works great for me!

  • i am the same way – up at 5:30 during the week and 7AM on weekends to “get stuff done.” i know it’s weird and grandma-ish, but it works for me!

  • I am a morning person for sure. I get up most mornings between 5 and 5:45 and sleeping in is about 6 or 7. I also go to bed super early.

  • I love this! I so want to be a person like you – I want all of those things you get in the morning. Tell me your secrets! Do you go to bed pretty early?

  • I’m both, but more of a night person. It is my “me” time away from J so I like to take advantage of it. =)

  • I, too, love mornings. I wake up early, but I don’t get much done (other than blogging stuff). I like to lay around, relax, and enjoy the laziness of the morning. So I’m a morning person, but a lazy one :)

  • I am definitely a night person. I try really hard to be a morning person, but I always end up doing all my relaxing then!!

  • All the way morning person! Waking up early makes me feel like I have lead in the day compared to everyone. I feel like I can accomplish way more. I enjoy how quiet it is..so calming

  • I absolutely love the morning, for most of those reasons you mentioned… Coffee, oats, yoga, peace, quiet… it’s also the time I feel the most productive and full of energy. My transition to becoming a morning person was much like yours. When I was younger, I would sleep in until noon, now I never sleep past 6. I can’t even imagine sleeping in anymore!

  • Hands down. Morning person. I feel like the mind is calmer and I have a head start on the day. Because before I know it the day is miles ahead of me…and by the day I mean, of course, the people I share it with. The phone calls come, the interruptions, etc. There is a certain sacredness to the morning.

  • I wouldn’t officially declare myself a morning person yet, but I’m well on my way. I’ve noticed myself rising earlier and earlier as I get older. I agree with the points you stated, the sheer act of getting things accomplished so early gives a positive glint to any day.

  • I am definitely a morning person. I love it for all of the reasons you’ve listed and more. But like you, I was not always this way. I guess it comes with maturation and age. I do my best thinking, writing, and exercising early in the day.

I feel like most of us in the blog community savor our mornings, breakfasts, and comforting routines that go along with the early hours of the day.

Wow, so many morning people. I wish I could do it, I really do, but I am a slave to the snooze, and tend to run on a night schedule with insomniac roommates and a lovely gf who works night shift.

I think I am better in the summer, when there’s a crisp sun to greet you, even if its still a bit cold out in those wee hours of the morning.

    I think I’m a 10:30am to 2:30pm person.
