space.

This weekend, my sister and I tackled the slightly exhausting task of apartment hunting.

My first apartment shopping experience was typical: climbing countless flights of stairs in Soho walkups, debating the liveability of an eight-by-eight bedroom, running from the rat traps that graced the floors of all too many apartments.  Living in Manhattan is convenient and usually fun, but the apartment situations are far from glamorous.

On our less daunting search this past Saturday, I got to thinking about space – a precious commodity when you call an urban center home.

The minimal space between the foot of my bed and the fourth wall of my room: just enough space for the width of my yoga mat – hanging out the door most mornings.

White space, highlighting food that should be slowly savored [in this case, a rich chocolate truffle].

Not an inch of space when I pack a salad for lunch.

My kitchen: space for experiments in flavor.

What space is around you?  Are you cramped for space, or do you have too much?

  • Good luck with the apartment hunting!!

I have a “goldilocks” amount of space around me – not too little, not too much; just right.

  • I have a whole new appreciation for space after living in a TINY apartment in Korea (10×15 studio) and spending way too much time in hostel. It’s been so luxurious being back in a “real” house but when I get my own place, I now know I can make do with minimal space.

  • I use to share one room with two people but now I have too much space! Love the way you look at the world..if I could spend one hour in your mind it would be a beautiful place to live :)

  • My mama always told me never to marry a man with bad closet space.

  • High fives for a beautifully themed post here! I love it! I like thinking about the idea of space a lot. I feel like such a minimalist person, but my literal spaces are often crowded with items. I want more space within the space that already exists. Make sense?

Fun post! For the most part I have enough space in my apartment, or at least I will when I get around to decluttering. Sometimes I wish my city had more green space, as you mention.

  • everything’s greener in brooklyn! ;)

seriously, though — i have so much more space here and i love it. we’ll discuss soon!

  • I have plenty of space but I can’t wait until I have my OWN space that I can decorate and use entirely as I please.

On second thought, maybe I can wait. I’m not ready to fork over rent and mortgage yet!

  • great post. my room is PACKED with stuff/random junk mostly. I have just enough room for my yoga mat too! which is where I practice most often. I definitely have too much space in my schedule right now… I need to find a job/do more of my homework.
    have a lovely day :)

  • I have quite a lot of room, even though I still live with my parents, I have a big bedroom and my own bathroom, so I count myself very lucky.

  • My apartment at school is definitely slightly cramped for space.. But, I am in no position to complain, I’m grateful for what I have and the people I share it with.

LOVE your mention about the notepad as a place of ideas and dreams. So fabulous.

Have a superb evening, lovely lady <3

  • space is the one thing i miss the most in singapore. as the second most densely populated city in the world space is a pure luxury here. there is really nothing more calming and energizing than the open space of land around a house.
