tricks and treats: halloween, in words.

There is really no good way to convey the oddity of Halloween in a city.  Stepping into the elevator and spotting abandoned sequins and feathers in the corner.  Fighting Supermans and Wonderwomans for ever elusives taxis.  Clamoring for subway room with characters out of Geico commercials, classy-trashy Bravo reality shows, or simply those who think fishnets and briefs are a costume.  [They aren't.]

I think the holiday is great fun, and even if I don’t go out every year in the future, I can’t imagine not feeling affected by the spirit and putting together a costume.  At this stage of life, it’s far more about the tricks than the treats.

I wish I could share some pictures from my evening, but sadly, I’ve just endured a technological disaster, and my brand-new birthday present camera has, for some unknown and very unfortunate reason, deleted every photo I took in the past 48 hours.  All I can share is this blurred, red-eyed photo from my sister’s Blackberry:

I dressed as an art student, with colored tights, grey shorts, and an assortment of accessories, including the cloche hat that I plan to wear again, and often.  Perhaps a photograph will surface on Facebook; for now, I mourn.

Today, I moved on to the treat portion of the holiday.  Oh look, my camera saved one lone photograph:

What would Halloween be without a sweet treat?  I don’t, unsurprisingly, do candy, but I am very fond of good quality chocolate.  This weekend just happened to play host to a wonderful event for we pretentious dark chocolate lovers, the NYC Chocolate Show.

[I am not dwelling on the loss of my photographs from this event.  Not.  Dwelling.]

I’d like to get some photos from a friend who I shared the experience with, and I’ll post a fuller recap later this week.  I enjoyed tiny tastes of many chocolates from around the globe, sat in a culinary theater to view the creation of white chocolate gnocchi, and sipped chocolate martinis and perfectly paired dessert wines.  It was very, very good fun and the perfect Halloween treat.

I’m off to consume the remaining vegetables in my refrigerator; since I ate chocolate for lunch, I think I’m in need.

What treats were a part of your Halloween?
