health nuts and chia experiments.

If I could guess, I would say there are at least twenty-five foods I’ve tried due to their appearance on a blog.  I’m not talking about specific products, more specific foods that I learned to seek out for myself.  I first saw Greek yogurt on a blog; now it’s a daily addiction.  I first spotted pumpkin on a blog; this time of year, it’s a seasonal obsession.  You get the idea.

Even as I was intrigued by the plethora of whole foods pictured throughout the internet, there were some I swore I’d never be “out there” enough to purchase.  I should know better than to ever say never – one of the best aspects of healthy living is that it’s always a work in progress.  Five years ago, I couldn’t have distinguished a turnip from a beet; two years ago, I was terrified of avocados; one year ago, I thought chia seeds were only for intense health nuts.

Apparently, I’m an intense health nut.

As trying new foods rarely fails, my recent chia experiments have been a lot of fun.

Their versatility has allowed me to incorporate them into dishes from sweet to savory, from dinner to dessert.  They have the ability to soak up several times their weight in liquid, which lends a wonderfully velvety texture.  And their stats as a nutritional powerhouse certainly don’t hurt.

Sure, purchasing chia seeds might sound odd to the general public, but eating a Nutrigrain bar for breakfast (well, or ever) sounds strange to me.  I’d choose nutritional experimentation over a lengthy ingredient list any day.

I’m happy to have a new pantry staple – even if it means I’m a crazy health foodie.  I’ll embrace that title with pride.

What is a food you’ve recently tried due to a blog?  And do you consider yourself a health nut?

  • Whoa! I’m not intense enough for chia yet, plus I have NO idea where to purchase such.

  • you may have convinced me to get over my fear of the chia! haha.

i’d say i’m a former health nut turned “normal” eater — when i’m home and feeling like i want a wholesome meal, i’ll make it. but when i’m out, i eat whatever i want — i’m happiest this way. :)

  • chia seeds were definitely blog inspired and was an amazing find! its crazy how many different ways you can use them!

  • Chia seeds too funny enough! The lovely Brandi over at branappetit sent me some and I absolutely love them – put them in my oats each day and have also added them to baked goods :) Their nutritional stats are phenomenal… but I must admit that my friends think they are weird haha. They have no taste to me though, so why not add these powerhouses to your diet and get all the benefits is what I say!

  • I’m totally a healthy nuts and recent new food to try was chia as well. I want to make that chia polenta, looks so good.
you have to try my chocolate chia pudding! ;)

i think the most “health nutty” thing i have been eating lately is definitely chia seeds, hemp milk, and goji berries…ha these 3 things sound like stuff from another planet, :) my brother is always like so confused by all these weird names he thinks chia is hilarious like the chia pets or w/e lol ;)

    lots of love

  • I had never tried flax until I saw it all over the blog world — now, my breakfast isn’t complete without a heaping spoonful.

  • I tried chia after reading blogs too. I like it.
What proportions did you use for your chia drink?

    • Alison,

1/4 of a lime, ~8 oz water (I just filled a glass), 1 t chia seeds, 1 t agave. It wasn’t sweet, just refreshing – kind of like limeade. It would’ve been great with some fresh mint!

  • Many many things have I tried due to food blogs number one being almond butter which to quote my husband i eat “a shit ton of” hahah.
I don’t consider myself a health nut but I am very interested in healthy living and healthy foods!

  • i am a health nut YES! haha!
i am loving all the chia goodness here. the polenta and the chia lime dressing look fantastic. i think i should give that a try some time soon.

Usually blog-food-finds become staples! Unfortunately, I tried kelp noodles because I kept seeing them on blogs. While I like them, ok, they aren’t as great as I’d hoped!

Now I’ll definitely have to pick up some chia seeds…
