I know October only began yesterday, but it’s never too early to begin Halloween scheming. Even though I have large amounts of celebrations before I don this year’s costume (including my birthday!), multiple recent sightings of oversized pumpkins have me just a bit excited.
Halloween used to be one of those holidays that screamed danger to me. It kicks off that time of year when sweet treats are thrown at us on a near weekly basis, beginning with orange and black candy wrappers and culminating in New Year’s chocolates.
I hesitate to use the word “treat,” because it is riddled with connotations of “unhealthy” and “guilt.” Unsurprisingly, I think there are many traditionally healthy foods that are worthy of the treat title – most recently, I’ve gotten over the demise of summer fruits and am now relishing in seasonal apples and figs. Nonetheless, I firmly believe that classic desserts have their place as well.
Last week, I stopped into a local Parisian-style bakery in order to purchase my favorite baked good, French macarons, as a gift for a friend. I was asked to take a two-minute survey, and seven questions later, as a thank you, I was gifted with this:
Twenty-five fresh, homemade, delectable chocolate truffles? Yes, please. I had a couple earlier this week, and I am not exaggerating when saying this is one of the most divine desserts I’ve ever had.
I’ve also got some of my grandmother’s mandel bread stashed in the freezer, which is an ideal accompaniment to evening tea:
And you can never go wrong with chocolate hazelnut butter:
Or flights of wine:
Or tastes of your sister’s birthday desserts:
Truly, I think small, daily bites of chocolate or sips of wine make me a better person.
What’s your current favorite treat?

I have high hopes for Babycakes ;) You know where I ‘am’ with regards to treats right now…it’s a work in progress. Though I just ate the most amazing concoction- I have literally no food in my apartment right now so was scrounging around. Mug filled with mini honey nut shredded wheat, raisins, cinnamon, vanilla and soy milk left in the fridge until soggy. Sounds gross but there were so many natural flavours in the mug, literally shining through…it was awesome. I wasn’t going to blog about it, but halfway through eating I grabbed my camera so I know to recreate it (I just looked at the cereal box- it has coconut in it which explains the coconut taste…so good!)
You already know MY favorite treat = Theo chocolate! :-D

My dear Leslie those look like the best truffles I’ve ever seen! I have to agree that chocolate does make me a better person. Currently my favorite treat is this local yogurt shop that blends tart sugarless yogurt with banana to make a soft serve..its beyond delicious and soo healthy…I pair it with white chocolate..to die for!

i also have a love affair with ice cream that is growing intensely. i think we have a future together… yeah, it’s bad. or really good! :)
I think that is one awesome thank-you…just for taking a survey:) That’s really generous of them! It looks DIVINE:DDD
Current treat? As strange as it sounds…cereal. Because I only get to have it once a week, and all the good things I’ve been waiting for over the last 6 days go right in the bowl with it:)
Oh wow, gorgeous photos. My current treat is definitely a glass of wine. I love trying new wine, learning about where they come from, and savoring them during that bit of “me time” I try to steal each day.
My favorite treat is not really a ‘treat’ in a traditional sense: New Mexico Roasted Green Chile. Because its only fresh when its in NM, I only get it when I’m there, which is once a year. :)
