an indian breakfast feast.

I consider myself a very adventurous eater, as long as the food at hand is what we clean eaters would consider “real.”  But, the one meal I have trouble compromising on is breakfast.

I’m not sure why.  There are breakfast foods besides oats that I enjoy.  Perhaps it’s because it’s simpler for me to cram a large breakfast into one bowl, with the additions of milk, fruit, and nuts.  Perhaps it’s the comfort in starting the day in a tried and true fashion.  Perhaps I’m just stubborn.

So, you might be shocked to learn I switched up breakfast for three days straight over my weekend out of town – and of course, yesterday was breakfast-free altogether.

On Sunday, while staying with my very-near-to-marriage friend and her fiancé, I awoke to the smells of curry and vegetables sautéing.  Upon entering the kitchen, I saw a cutting board full of freshly chopped coconut, then watched it pureé in the blender with raw peanuts and chiles.  Usually, I participate in cooking ventures, but on this occasion, I took a step back, sipped my rich black coffee, and simply observed.

The final product was a breakfast dosa, a thin, crepe-like pancake created from a blend of lentils (soaked overnight) and rice.  Inside: potatoes, onions, and peas, doused in healthy doses of curry and spice.

Dipped in homemade coconut chutney, with a side of fresh pineapple – trying new things is always the way to go.  I loved sitting together in our pajamas, enjoying a meal I never would have dreamt up myself.  A perfect end to our weekend, and a perfect introduction to my best friend’s new Indian-spiced life.

What meal would you rather not compromise on?

  • Oh this looks AMAZING! I need to switch up my breakfasts more for sure.

  • People keep telling me I need to try dosa! But I’m like you… I’m adventurous for everything but breakfast. I like my typical breakfast foods – oats, pancakes, French toast, waffles, yogurt + granola + fruit – the standards.

Wow love the unique and different Indian breakfast! Bravo for trying something new. I know A LOT of people have a hard time changing up their breakfast…it seems the most “ritualistic” of all meals. Weird huh? I guess it’s all about the start-of-your-day type habit.

    Pineapple! So good :)

Pineapple! Can’t beat it. And I have you to thank for my love of oatmeal. But I’d agree breakfast is most difficult to compromise. Having a morning routine provides a bit of stability at the start of the day.

  • wow…homemade dosa in the morning? I’m REALLY impressed! that’s AWESOME that you are trying someting adventurous…for breakfast, no less! I’m pretty adamant about my breakfast and dinner. I like my oats!

  • same here…. breakfast should be the safest meal for me, otherwise I get annoyed all day long :)

  • I do have to have a breakfast, and prefer that it’s satisfying and filling.

  • Pineapple is my favorite fruit i love love love it!! i love breakfast but can’t really eat what i’d really like cus i have to get up at 5am and don’t want to get up any earlier to make something. i usually eat something quick…except on the weekends!! :)

  • Breakfast is normally the first thing I will compromise on since I always feel like I have the rest of the day to eat exactly what I want. But sometimes it’s hard to give up something you’ve been looking forward to!
Oatmeal is just so dang comforting!
That indian breakfast sounds incredible. When I was visiting my friend in Malaysia I would come downstairs to curry and roti and I was literally in heaven!!
