following instructions.

So, we all know my overactive imagination makes it a serious struggle for me to follow recipes.  This past weekend, however, while acting as my mother’s kitchen assistant, I was forced to adhere to the rules within the recipes she had selected.  I learned a good lesson: every now and then, following a recipe can teach you an important skill.

I suppose there’s reasoning behind us all being schooled to abide by instructions.  By following my mom’s chosen recipe for lemon-roasted peppers, I learned a simple and delicious new way to prepare vegetables.

A roasted pepper tutorial:

Preheat oven to broil.  Quarter and seed the peppers, and place skin side up on a baking sheet:

yellow pepper

Broil peppers 7-8 minutes, until skins turn black:

Remove from oven, place in airtight container or bag.  Let steam about 15 minutes:

Remove skins from peppers, and enjoy!

Usually I like to leave the skins on my produce (more nutrients and more flavor) – but sometimes, it’s ok to do without.

Tonight, in addition to the pepper, I roasted a large beet:

  • I NEVER follow recipe instructions – haha I’m always improvising :-D

  • I’m good at following instructions most often – EXCEPT in the kitchen (which is probably why I prefer cooking to baking!) I love taking a recipe for ideas and then thinkin’ outside the box to personalize it :)

  • I have a major problem following recipes! I always print three different recipes to the same dish and then mix and match until I’m so confused I end up making it up as I go. I’m awful about this…and people always ask for my recipes and I honestly don’t know what I put in anything. Lol have a great day!

  • When I first became interested in cooking I used to follow recipes to a T. I think all beginner cooks do, that’s how you learn! Once I cooked more and became familiar with techniques and ingredients I had the knowledge base to experiment more, and now I am much better at improvisation.

  • hmm this looks fantastic! i am making grilled veggies for dinner myself. regarding instruction i have to admit that i like putting in my own personal taste to flavours. i know what my tastebuds are like so i tend to make meals that please them ;)
    enjoy your weekend

  • I am terrible at following instructions. I have every intention of doing so, but get bored half-way through and do my own interpretation. I’m calling it creativity and classing it as a good thing ;) Though having said that, after many MANY failed attempts to roll wraps/make breakfast cookies, I followed the video tutorials to the ‘T’ and had success. Now I can get creative again!
