sibling rivalry and shrimp tales.

Growing up, my sister and I did not get along as nicely as we (usually) do today.  Our after school afternoons were often packed with unnecessary bickering, from channel flipping between Darkwing Duck and Animaniacs to confiscating each others’ colored pencils.

One way that Ally liked to torture me was with food.  A client of our father’s used to gift him with bulk bags of frozen shrimp, which would then be stored in our basement freezer.  When in a slightly malicious mood, my sister would tiptoe to the basement and sneak into the dark corner where our extra freezer stood.  As soon as she found me, the bag of shrimp would appear from behind her back, and it would head straight for my face.

I didn’t want to be within ten feet of that bag.  I think I cried once because of it.  On another occasion, she chased me around the entire first floor of our house, all because of a few frozen crustaceans.

Yesterday, when she discovered a bag in our freezer (thanks Mom!), she immediately pulled it out and inched it in the direction of my head.  You know, for old times sake.

  • 1 ripe peach, chopped
  • 1/2 c fresh cranberries

Heat water in small saucepan, over medium heat.  Add peach and cranberries; simmer about 10 minutes.  Add cumin, allspice, and agave; continue simmering until caramelized, about 3 more minutes.

Meanwhile, heat olive oil in skillet over medium heat.  Add shrimp; cook 2-3 minutes each side, until opaque.

Toss shrimp with compote; serve over string beans.

I knew I had a good reason for freezing some fresh cranberries last winter.

  • My brothers used to tease me so much when we were younger. Now I’m just used to it! haha

  • My brother is seven years younger than i am, but even so we like to annoy the hell out of each other, which our parents never understand. They expect me to know better, but in my book even if there is a large age difference sibling dynamics are the same. We love each other though!

  • omg that story is too funny! hahah. im glad that the memory of shrimp is not a bad one though– because your lovely shrimp creation looks SOOO good!! :) xoxox

  • Ugh my sister was SO HORRIBLE to me growing up. To be fair, I was probably a whiny, crying little bastard as well but she definitely used to beat me up and bully me! We love each other now!

  • Funny enough, living abroad has brought me closer to my sister. I’m looking forward to hanging out with her when I move back — we fought ALL the time growing up but now, I think were actually becoming friends.

  • Gotta love sisters :) I am the oldest (by 7 years)so I didn’t get it too bad from mine, however her incessant crying for 3 straight years after birth was probably enough for this lady! Shrimp recipe looks fab, love the savory/sweet combo – different ideas like this are awesome in my book – thanks!! :)

  • Lol. Mean, but funny now :P

My brothers and I got along really well. Thanks to mega-strict parents more than us being ‘friends’!
